Gibson Jerome "Gibby" Haynes (born
1957) is an
American musician, radio personality, painter and the lead singer of the group
Butthole Surfers.
Early life and career
Born and raised in
Dallas, Texas, he's the son of actor
Jerry Haynes, best known as
Dallas-based kids' TV host "
Mr. Peppermint." Haynes was a star on his high school's basketball team, and he attended
Trinity University to study
accounting. While at Trinity, Gibby was the captain of the basketball team, president of his fraternity, and was named the Accounting Student of the Year. After graduating, he went to work as an auditor for Peat Marwick accounting firm. After a year of working in accounting, he formed the Butthole Surfers, a group who became notorious for their elaborate stage shows and pervasive,
psychedelic music.
Haynes played saxophone on several albums, including
Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac, one of the Butthole Surfers' earlier works.
Haynes appears with
Ministry (offering a memorable lead vocal on
Jesus Built My Hotrod) and the 2006
Revolting Cocks CD entitled
Cocked and Loaded.
Haynes has also fronted the band
P with friend
Johnny Depp and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. Gibby also did guest vocals for
The Dead Milkmen and
Deconstruction. His newest project is called Gibby Haynes and His Problem.
Personal life and other works
Haynes with
Johnny Depp produced a mini-documentary about
John Frusciante's life called
Stuff. Haynes is also a late night punk rock DJ. In late 1992, Haynes appeared in
GWAR's first (and most famous) long-form video,
Phallus in Wonderland as director Fritz Wang. Haynes appears briefly in
Jim Jarmusch's 1995 film
Dead Man, which stars
Johnny Depp.
He currently lives in
Brooklyn, New York.
